Read-Cycle was initially a sustainability program created by a 2018 Youth Ambassador of Canada to the United States under the guidance of mentors from the Youth Ambassadors Program. Read-Cycle 2018 focused on collecting used books and redistributing them to low income families.
The name Read-Cycle was coined to mark the cycling of books among Edmontonian families. Our program was featured by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of States and the U.S. Embassy of Ottawa!
Our Youth Ambassador alumna has decided to make Read Cycle an ongoing program. The program has evolved over the last 4 years and now specifically focuses on empowering newcomer and indigenous youths. In particular, we aim to encourage at-risk youths from these communities to pursue higher education and civic engagement. Read-Cycle packages are just one component of the full programming we provide now!
We have since received over 10 000$ of funding annually from various sources such as Fulbright Canada, the Government of Canada - Service Corps Rising Youth Program, and local donors.
We additionally receive marketing and promotional support from local NGOs and businesses like Action for Healthy Communities, C5 HUB, We and the World Centre.
